Surreal poster design and art are two of my favourite styles. The idea of creating a piece so unbelievable and wacky is very appealing to me. This poster is part one of a triptych series that focuses on surreal collage concepts. All three posters were created in photoshop through the use of masking, layering, applying various fills and adjusting the different filter values. I wanted to incorporate some of my favourite things in this poster, like little Easter eggs. I love classic and vintage styles, so the typewriter, cars, motel sign, telephone, and older TV set are an homage to that. The idea of space being so vast made me think, "Well, then anything could happen out there!" I wanted to tell the story of two kids on an adventure. They have found this crazy pit stop of the past. Part one is more of an establishing piece about where they are and what they found. The second poster answered the question, "Where will they go next?"
This is the second poster in the series, and it follows the kids who are now young adults. They've been stranded in this crazy dimension of chaos for quite some time. I would believe at this stage they are starting to find the beauty in the unknown. I wanted to continue using purple and deep blue tones to indicate a link between all the posters. There is several elements that tie this second poster to the first. The crows are going to be a continual feature, although noticeably dwindling in amount. The vintage car, is also a bit of an homage to the first poster. I did want to play around a bit with colour this time around, so the vibrant red version was a favourite of all the variations. The final and concluding poster to this series answered the question of, "What did they find?"
This final poster was my favourite of all the three. It perfectly encompasses the journey of life and what we choose to do with it. The kids, now an older couple, have lived in the vast unknown of this crazy universe for the remainder of their life. They have reached the final destination. Along the way they picked up friends, an energetic space dog who loyally stuck by their side and enjoyed spectacular sights. Now as they admire their final show, they have a choice to make. Stay in this unbelievable environment or return to the point of origin on earth through the space portal. I left this poster with that open ending, for the viewer to not know what they decide, but instead to leave it up to interpretation. The crows have decreased to all but one, an indicator of their one final choice. They have officially reached the end of the journey. Creating this series was the most fun and creative I have been since my last project!
